Secret Silence Space
Our house is located on a peninsula in South West Finland within the large archipelago of the Baltic Sea. “Satama” means harbour in Finnish and is a metaphor for our residence.
The residency shall harbour writers and artists who are seeking a hideaway. It offers an open and creative space where they can work on projects in a profoundly beautiful natural setting. Surrounding the house is a magical world of thousands of islands, trees and wild birds.
Satama House is close to the Gamla Stan (Old Town) of Ekenäs, situated in a lively community with a market square, cafés, restaurants and shops. People are bilingual in this region. They speak Finnish and Swedish and, normally, very good English. By train, bus, or car, Ekenäs is only 1,5 hours away from Helsinki and Turku.
We collaborate with the City Council and several cultural institutions in our region, including the Pro Artibus foundation and the Goethe Institute in Helsinki. Modernist Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck lived in Ekenäs from 1925-1941, and the city dedicated a museum to her which is just around the corner and you can easily get in touch with the Helene Schjerfbeck association.
We offer stipends from 1 to 3 months in our residency. We are not covering travel or daily expenses, but we do cover all running housing costs. Just send us an email with a small description of you and your project. The size of the residency flat is 45 qm and offers space for 1 or 2 people. Animals are unfortunately not welcome.
